Bonjour! This week in class Yr 8 students made European badges, Yr 9 students made European posters and Yr 10 students completed projects on a French speaking country or region to celebrate European Day of Languages. All of the beautiful and creative work was entered into a competition with winners announced at assembly on Friday. Bravo tout le monde!

And just to add to all the excitement "La France" won the European football tournament organised by Clare Murphy! What a great afternoon on the pitch. Allez les bleus!

Vanessa brings French to a whole new level...

Meet Vanessa St-Pierre, who has come all the way from Lac St-Jean, Québec, Canada to be our new French language assistant for 2009-2010. This week Vanessa has given Yr 11, 12,13 and 14 students an excellent powerpoint presentation on her native Québec and demonstrated to students that French is not just a European language but a truely international language. We learnt that she is a proud "bleuet" or "blueberry" which is the pet name given to people from her region, where blueberries grow in abundance. The boys were delighted to hear about "le hockey" which is the national sport and we can't wait to taste some authentic "sirop d'érable" after Christmas and hear more about the "cabanes à sucre" or "sugar shacks". Vanessa is also hosting the French Club this year so don't forget to check out the school notice board for more details.

Miam! (French for yum) was written all over the lips of Yr 8 French students today, as they celebrated completion of their first year of French at Shimna with a typical "petit déjeuner français" or French breakfast. "Crêpes", "baguette", "pain au chocolat", "brioche", "croissants", "petits pains", "gauffres belges" and of course "Nutella" were all on the menu. "Merci beaucoup" to all the parents who contributed.

Year 8 French students who took part in "Le Grand Défi" national competition were all smiles when their certificates and prizes arrived. They sat a 30-minute test sponsored by Linguascope at the end of May. The purpose of the competition is to help stimulate interest in the learning of French and to help identify and reward achievement on the part of students. "Félicitations!" to all the students who participated and did so well! (Particularly those who were burning the midnight oil on the Linguascope website!)

Le Printemps est enfin revenu!! :-)

Après de longues et froides journées d'hiver, "l'hexagone" enlève son manteau blanc et laisse place à un spectacle de couleurs et de senteurs...

A Strasbourg, toutes les maisons sont fleuries. Une merveille pour les yeux et le nez!! Les promeneurs pourront admirer les fenêtres et les balcons ornés de fleurs de toutes les couleurs. Les cigognes réapparaissent dans le paysage Alsacien...

Le printemps, c'est aussi le retour du soleil. Les premiers rayons du soleil viennent "chatouiller" le sommet de la magnifique et imposante Cathédrale de Strasbourg

Et le Parlement Européen brille de mille feux...

Comment ne pas se laisser tenter par une petite balade en "péniche" sur les rives de l'ILL ?

Où pourquoi ne pas faire une promenade dans le parc de l'Orangerie?

Félicitations Rachel Clearey!

Rachel has been offered a place to study French and English at Glasgow University. The lucky and talented Rachel had a wealth of choice as she was also offered a place to study in 4 other universities. "I chose Glasgow because the city and the course offered was very appealing. I visited the university in January and am returning there for the Open Day on the 31st March". Rachel will complete her A2 French course in June and we wish her every success in her exams and in the future.

On Friday 27th February 6 students from our French partner school Lycée Amiral Ronarc’h in Brest, France were welcomed to the area by Councillor Collin McGrath, chairman of Down District Council, Councillor Michael Coogan, chairman of Cultural and Economic Development and Eric Tommasini, Towns Centre Manager in a reception in Downpatrick. The students were presented with certificates for completing their work experience in the local area and given a guided tour of the Saint Patrick Centre and St Patrick's grave. The French students had a fantastic time with us and didn't want to go home- always a good sign! Our students are still chatting via MSN and e-mail and some even have plans to meet up again over the summer. Amis pour la vie!

Mardi Gras et Carnaval

We marked “Mardi Gras et Carnaval” with year 9 students in their French classes. During the session year 9's had the opportunity of sampling authentic French pancakes (crêpes) some of which were made by our own expert crêpe maker Laetitia. Students also made masks to enter into the spirit of "Carnaval". Our French assistant Laetitia prepared a powerpoint about "Mardi Gras et Carnaval" in France and got the year 9's to translate her authentic French recipe. For homework students had to make the pancakes/wear their mask and remember to hold a "golden" coin in their hand while flipping the pancakes. (Laetitia told us that this brings good luck for the whole year!)

Notre voyage à Brest...

Nous sommes de retour d'un voyage chouette. Nous avons appris beaucoup de français, beaucoup sur la culture française et sur la vie du pays. Nous avons appris plus que nous avions pensé. Nous avons rencontré beaucoup de gens sympas. Nous avons été très bien accueillis par le Lycée, les parents et même le Maire de Brest.

Nous avons fait des stages au Lycée et au primaire comme mini assistants tandis que Niomi a fait son stage dans L'école de Musique à Brest- une des meilleures écoles de musique au monde à ce qu'on sache.
Nous savons maintenant beaucoup au sujet des coutumes et nous aimons surtout "faire la bise" ce qui est plus aimable. Orla pense que les garçons ont plus de respect pour les filles. Scott est d'accord avec Orla. Niomi trouve que les garçons étaient plus charmants et Polly est d'accord.

Scott veut maintenanat démenager en France!

Nous tenons à remercier le directeur du Lycée Amiral Ronarc'h, Monsieur Didier Faccenda, Le professeur Coordinateur Madame Florence Mahieux-Michaud, L'Ecole Primaire Louise Michel, L'Ecole de Musique de Brest, les professeurs, nos correspondants, leurs familles et Le Maire de Brest, Monsieur François Cuillandre.

Congratulations to year 14 student Tanya Murray who has been offered a place to study French at Oriel College in Oxford in September. Her French teacher Ms. Moffett said 'Tanya is a motivated and very capable student and we are delighted she has been offered a place in Oxford.' Tanya will complete her A2 exams in French in the summer after having already achieved an A* at GCSE and an A in her AS exams last June. Congratulations to Tanya and we wish her the very best as she continues her studies in French next year.

French revision! An attainable New Years Resolution!

Just received your GCSE or A-level mock grade? Would you like to improve your grade?

Well here are 10 top tips to hit that grade!

Go to the Shared Resources "Modern Languages" "French" folder on the college intranet select "GCSE" "AS" or "A2" folders and download some past papers including listening files. Work through one paper per week or as much of it as you can. There are listening and reading papers as well as speaking papers with past roleplays/stimulus cards.

GCSE students you should also go to the "Resources and revision" section of the French page on the College website and download the oral question files to your MP3 player - the questions match those in your oral booklets. While there download some of the other revision tips and work through them at your own pace.

Attend the A-level grammar master classes which start this Monday at 3.30pm in room 244 with our fantastic French assistant Laetitia Guerlot.

Attend the GCSE grammar master classes which will commence in February. Ask your French teacher for more details.

Go to the French Club on Mondays 1.30-2.00 (If you are on lunch at this time) and get some help from Laetitia the French assistant and our sixth-form French students. Our sixth form French students may even act as your "buddy/mentor" and guide you from their experience. Go to the French club for more details.

Attend the GCSE listening,reading and oral clinics. Ask your French teacher for more details.

Do your homework! Yes! Homework is excellent revision, so feel good about it!

Form your own French study group and get together to ask eachother oral questions on a regular basis.

Get a French penpal. Ask Ms Clarke to set it up for you.

Watch a French film with English subtitles.

“Le Père Fouettard” AKA "The bogey man"

Today, we learned about “Le Père Fouettard” (“The whipping father") AKA the “Bogey man”. Intrigued? Find out more information on the link below:

He can be seen as the “bad Santa” in the run up to Christmas in certain parts of France and Switzerland. When Santa gives presents to the well-behaved children, "le Père Fouettard" would appear with his whips as a threat to ward off any naughty behaviour.

It originated from folklore (much like the London legend of Sweeney Todd) . To this day, he’s used to scare little kids into being good. The sack of coal threat seems mild now!

Quelle horreur! We were all speechless. Apparently Laura Salamin actually met "le Père Fouettard" while living in Switzerland. So it's all true!

Tahnee also met him while living in Germany! Pauvre petites!

Il a lieu sur la trés celebre "Place Kleber", au coeur de la ville Alsacienne... Vous serez sans aucun doute impressionné par les illuminations et particulierement si vous y allez le soir... Les gourmands y trouveront leur compte. En effet, vous pourrez deguster quelques fantastiques spécialites Alsaciennes, comme la "choucroute", le Baeckeoffe", et biensur les traditionnelles patisseries comme le Kougloff!!! The continental market at the City Hall in Belfast!

We had the opportunity to sample some continental dishes at the market on Wednesday after the QFT. C'était délicieux!

Laura recommends "La Raclette" at the Swiss stand and "crêpes".

Ms Clarke recommends "La Tartiflette".

Clare liked the Dutch pancakes.

Rachel went all Spanish on us and had "churros".

Madeline surprised us all and had a ostrich burger. Apparently she didn't really eat meat before coming to Northern Ireland.

Scott got extra sugar on his "crêpe" for saying "merci", not to mention free Russian beads for being polite at the Russian stand. Quelle politesse!

Stands to look out for: Turkish pastries, German "wurst", Spanish omelette and Paëlla.

If we still haven't convinced you just look(top) at what was available at the French "patisserie".

It really is a feast for all the senses so you don't have to buy anything but if you do make sure to walk around first before making your choice as it is a bit pricey.

Persepolis

AS and A2 French students attended an introduction to the film Persepolis at the QFT Belfast yesterday. They listened to Dr Dominique Jeannerod, explaining in French, issues pertaining to the film - family life and relationships, gender issues, prejudice & racism, democracy and human rights, violence & conflict. Dr Jeannerod is a lecturer in the school of Languages,Literature and Performing Arts at Queen's University and has published articles on various aspects of French Culture and Film.

We found out where the title came from: "Perse" the French word for Persia (the ancient empire which stretched across Iran) and "Polis" the Greek word for city. (City of Persia.)

"Persepolis" was the ancient ceremonial capitol of the Persian Empire. Cyrus the Great chose the site (which is 70km northeast of Shiraz - not the wine region!) but his son, Darius the great was responsible for building the city around 500 B.C.

The film itself is an autobiographical coming-of-age French animation by graphic novelist Marjorie Satrapi. It is as funny as it is tragic. The film also charts the history of Iran, as well as how Satrapi eventually left her home country due to the regime's oppression of women. It is beautifully animated as we witness the trials faced by an outspoken Iranian girl who finds her unique attitude, and outlook on life, repeatedly challenged during the Islamic revolution.

Members of the sixth form language committee were so taken by it they have decided to show this film for our French Film night in February. So watch this space for more details about the upcoming screening at Shimna!

A video-conference with Brussels.....

Last Monday year 12 French student Philip Crookes went on work experience to the European Commission Office in Belfast. The highlight of the day was a video-conference with the Commission in Brussels during which delegates from all the EU countries discussed and debated issues from around the EU in French and English. It was also of particular interest to Philip as he visited Brussels last year with the College and was able to talk about his experience with his mentor who travels regularly to Brussels on business. Philip was thrilled by the experience. "I always knew that languages were important but this made me realise how important languages can be in other areas of work like business, law, journalism and politics."

Is Brad Pitt an existentialist?

Madeline came up with another cool fact today! Did you know that Brad Pitt has a French tattoo? It reads "Absurdités de l'existence" roughly translating as the absurdity of life/existence.

We were all very impressed! Could he possibly be a fan of Camus?

Heres what he had to say about it in his interview with "Le Figaro" in October last year:

Le Figaro: Votre tatouage a l'air de dire que l'existence n'a pas de sens... non ?(Il rit.)

Brad Pitt: Je pense que l'existence elle-même n'est pas absurde mais qu'elle est pleine de choses absurdes. La tragédie, pour moi, c'est de se voir piégé à un carrefour parce qu'on est incapable de choisir son propre chemin.

We watched more of "Amelie" today, Polly still likes it a lot. There were some very strange scenes involving a creepy fruit vendor and Amelie's ongoing search for love. She looks for a man named "Dominique Bretodeau" because she found a momento of his past and wants deeply to return it. Eventually, after learning how to spell his name right, her quest began again. Polly likes Amelie's father's gnome.

We watched the first few minutes of "Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain" (Or "Amélie Poulain" for short)

It's an extremely bizzare film (E.g her home was so depressing, her pet goldfish "poisson rouge" (meaning: "gold fish") tried to kill itself!) but it has a great story behind it: "Je l'adore!" says Polly... And as usual, we all agree. =D

The narrator speaks VERY fast, adding to the originality (seemingly like a fairy tale - he introduces each character, their interests and strange habits.) Amélie's wild imagination means that she lives in her own world, meaning it's hard to understand her mind, hence the originality of the film. (C'est une histoire d'amour) C'est la vie d'Amélie, and her search for love.

C'est un film très bizzare, mais romantique!

We haven't finished watching it yet, but it looks like we will soon!

Year 10 and year 12 students had a visit last Thursday from the exciting French theatre company "Théâtre Fantastique". Students had the opportunity to watch a play, and listen to fantastic original French rock songs while at the same time improving their skills in French. We were delighted that students had this excellent opportunity which contributes to three areas of their education – drama, music and French. Students from St Mary’s in Downpatrick and Blackwater Integrated College also attended the event. Et oui! C'était vraiment fantastique!

Le Rendez-vous

We finally came up with a new name for our club! (Le Rendez-vous!)

Today (Monday 3rd November) we had some french food, "Le gratin Dauphinois" It's made mostly with "les pommes de terre, fromage et crème fraîche et lait". It was GREAT!! (We all love cheese, especially Polly =D)

The recipe:

Ingredients:

(For 6 people)

- 1 kg of large potatoes
- 150 ml of milk
- 150 ml of fresh cream
- 1 free range egg
- loads of grated cheese (to taste - for topping)
- Salt and pepper

Preparation:

- Peel potatoes
- Cut potatoes in slices
- Put half of potatoes in a big bowl
- Mix egg with milk and cream (adding salt and pepper to taste)
- Add around 1/3 of the mixture to potatoes
- Add the remaing potatoes.
- Top off with cheese
- Bake in oven at 250 degrees for 30-45 minutes. (Untill cheese turns golden brown)

Year 10's enjoy a “Festin Français"

This week Year 10 French students enjoyed a “Taste of France”. Students had the opportunity of experiencing authentic French cuisine and culture as well as sharing their own “French experience” with others. A huge thanks to all the students and parents who made it possible by sending in delicious items of French food(croissants, pain au chocolat, brioche, brie, camembert, baguette, crêpes, gâteaux, tarte, patisseries, chocolat belge etc), or relics of holidays in France (photos, leaflets, books etc.) to share with the rest of the class. Students topped it all off by watching a famous pair who know a lot about French feasting - Astérix and Obélix.
